Reading should adapt to your brainnot the other way around.

Focus Mode for ADHD readers who lose their place. OpenDyslexic font, colour overlays, and tunable spacing for dyslexia. Bionic Reading for visual flow. Genuine features, built because the defaults of every other reading app fail people who read differently.

Four reading modes built for how brains actually read

Each mode below is a one-click toggle inside Chaptera. Try them on any book in your library, in any combination.

Built For ADHD

Focus Mode

Dims everything on the page except the line you're reading right now. Follows you down the page automatically.

Built after one of our beta testers said: “I have ADHD. I used to lose my place every few paragraphs. Focus Mode follows the line I'm on. I finished a full chapter without losing my place once. That has never happened before.”

It is not that we have a short time to live, but that we waste a great deal of it. Life is long enough, and a sufficiently generous amount has been given to us for the highest achievements if it were all well invested.

But when it is wasted in heedless luxury and spent on no good activity, we are forced at last by death's final constraint to realize that it has passed away before we knew it was passing.

Thus, the life we receive is not short, but we make it so; nor do we have any lack of it, but are wasteful of it.

Built For Dyslexia

Dyslexia Friendly Mode

  • OpenDyslexic font — weighted bottoms make letters harder to flip or rotate visually.
  • Colour overlays — yellow, blue, or green tints reduce visual stress that white-on-black contrast can amplify.
  • Configurable spacing — letter, word, and line spacing each adjustable independently.
  • Italics off — italic letters are systematically harder to read with dyslexia. One toggle removes them book-wide.

Visual Flow

Bionic Reading

Bolds the start of each word so your eye saccades naturally from anchor point to anchor point. Originally developed for fast reading; in practice many ADHD readers use it for comprehension, not speed — the bolded prefixes give the eye somewhere to land when attention drifts.

Speed Reading

RSVP-style word-by-word. Tunable WPM. Good for skimming research papers when you're looking for a specific argument.

Line Focus

A Focus Mode variant — a movable horizontal lens. Drag it down the page line by line. Tactile, deliberate, for dense academic material where Focus Mode's auto-follow is too fast.

Why we built this

Most reading apps treat accessibility as a checkbox. Toggle a font. Pick a theme. Done. But the defaults of every reading interface — small text, white-on-black contrast, justified lines, italic emphasis — are tuned for a specific kind of reader. People who read differently get told to read better.

The reading modes in Chaptera exist because the people we built them with told us, specifically, what was breaking. ADHD readers lose their place not because they can't focus, but because the visual environment doesn't support the focus they have. Dyslexic readers don't need different content; they need different typography. The features we shipped came from people describing their actual reading experience, not from a checklist.

None of these features cost extra. The free tier includes every reading mode, every accessibility setting, every keyboard shortcut. If you're a teacher, therapist, or accessibility coach and you'd like a free Pro tier for clients or students, write to us at [email protected].

Try it free.

All reading modes are in the free tier. No credit card. No trial countdown. Use Chaptera as long as it's useful.
